Our project, "Heights Community Garden Days," will transform an underutilized neighborhood space into a welcoming community gathering place through monthly volunteer cleanups, planting events, and educational workshops.
Over the past year, a small group of local residents has organized informal cleanups and beautification efforts in the area. With support from Groundwork Grants, we hope to purchase gardening supplies, native plants, tools, and event materials to expand these efforts and make them more sustainable.
The project will benefit Heights residents of all ages by creating a cleaner, greener, and more attractive public space while providing opportunities for neighbors to meet, volunteer, and build community connections. We anticipate engaging approximately 75–100 residents over the course of the project, including families, seniors, and local youth.
This project matters because accessible green spaces improve neighborhood pride, environmental quality, and community well-being. By bringing residents together around a shared goal, we hope to create a lasting positive impact that extends beyond the physical improvements themselves and strengthens the sense of community in the Jersey City Heights.
